How Dark is Too Dark on Your Car Windows?
In Virginia, how much tint is legal for your car windows? How dark is too dark when dealing with your windshield? Many drivers apply tint to their auto glass for a variety of reasons. Whether it is to reduce the sun’s glare, for privacy, or to customize their ride, people love tint. However, there are set laws in Virginia about the amount of tint you can apply to the windows in your vehicle. While they may seem annoying or pointless to you, these laws exist for your safety and that of other drivers.

Ignorance of the Tint Law Excuses No One
As we stated above, Virginia’s law limiting the percentage of tint for car windows may seem heavy-handed and strict to you. However, legislators place these laws with a view toward safety on the state’s roads and highways. But what exactly does the law say? And before you think, “I just won’t read this. That will give me an excuse,” remember something. Ignorance of the law excuses no one. So, it is in your best interest to know the law and obey the law. This will help you avoid worries and trouble altogether.
Virginia’s Tint Laws for Vehicles
The laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia state that first, no one can apply tint or sun-shading to their vehicle’s windows unless that car, truck, or SUV has a mirror on each side. These mirrors should afford the driver a view of the road at least 200 feet behind the vehicle.
The law then directs that tint applied to the rear windows of the vehicle must not reduce the total light transmittance to less than 35 percent. As well, tint applied to the windshield and front windows can’t reduce the total light transmittance to less than 50 percent. Drivers also can’t have tint that reflects light to other vehicles more than 20 percent. Tint also must not produce holographic or prism effects. Any driver who breaks these laws is guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor of their first offense, and a Class 2 misdemeanor for subsequent offenses.
